Each year the American Lung Association issues its “State of the Air” report that includes a dubious list of the nation’s most polluted cities. Using official data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the American Lung Association grades areas based both on ozone and particle pollution. For particle pollution, they rank separately the areas with high year-round levels and those with high short-term levels (24 hours). Cities are ranked based on the number of days they exceeded the EPA’s standards for ozone and particulate pollution.
We can already see the air quality degrading here in Salt Lake City as the inversion sets in and we made the list in the short-term particle pollution category. How is the air quality in your city? Check out the rankings from the 2016 report:
